Questions to Inspire Finishing the Work

“I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.” (John 17:4, NIV)

Years ago, Mark and I were new to San Diego and volunteering with a pre-marital ministry at our new church. One week, our speaker was a Certified Financial Planner and she instructed us how to wisely steward our finances. Because the Bible speaks so much to finances, she was trying to help us apply what it says. She introduced us to a values sort exercise so that we could match our values with our use of finances. It was after that exercise that Mark and I discovered “meaningful work” was a shared value.

I had asked God before, “Why did you call me into this unique work of christian sex therapy?” and I immediately sensed Him responding with these familiar lyrics from an old hymn, “Bind my wandering heart to Thee.” He has repeatedly used my work to draw me closer to Him.

As a new mom, I was confused for a few years after encountering repeated, faulty teaching, and I questioned whether or not it was sinful for me to work a few hours as a mother. God is still teaching me a more nuanced response to this question, but stumbling across this verse recently was another reminder that work is good and of God.

“I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.”

He has given me a specific role and purpose to fulfill for Him. He has done the same for you! What unique work has He given you to finish? How are you bringing Him glory in whatever work He has called you to in this season?

I think it’s wise to reflect on intentional questions or have a planned conversation with a loved one to consider all areas of our life. I hope you take a little time to ponder and respond to these questions so that you’re inspired to bring glory to God on earth by finishing the work He gave you to do!

In addition to working through these questions below, make sure you check out the episodes related to this topic. The Certified Financial Planner is now a dear friend and a repeat guest on The Savvy Sauce: Natalie Taylor. I hope she inspires you to try your own value sort exercise! Jordan Raynor corrects some faulty assumptions I made as a new mom, and Rachel Cruze, Elizabeth Dixon, and Matt Bell share more biblical principles for stewarding money wisely.

Enjoy!
